The Bench

The creation of furniture, like any other human construction, necessitates violence in one form or another. This violence could be a product of the manufacturing process, such as the dissection and standardization of a living tree, or the environmental damage caused by the tools, energy and chemicals used to process this material. On the other hand, this violence can also be intentional, such as the use of hostile architecture or anti-sleep devices in our built environments. The bench, in particular, is a point where both necessary and intentional violence converge. In the public sphere, designers put time and resources into intentionally crippling our furniture with the pure intention of exclusivity. This bench talks about the intersection of these forces, where violence upon violence has combined to create a monstrosity.
